The Women the Church Needs

“A worthy woman who can find? For her price is far above rubies.

The heart of her husband trusteth in her, And he shall have no lack of gain. “

Prov 31:10-11

A godly wife is an irreplaceable treasure. A godly wife is a blessing to her husband, their children, and the church of the Living God. When we consider the Bible, there are many accounts of the type of women we need in the Lord’s church.

We need women of great faith. Mark 5:25-34 tells of a woman who suffered from an issue of blood for a period of twelve years. She did not just suffer from the issue of bleeding and the uncleanliness (Lev 15) that would go along with it, she suffered at the hands of the very physicians that were supposed to be able to heal her. She had every reason to be bitter and angry. Her faith was still great. “For she said, If I touch but his garments, I shall be made whole”  (Mark 5:28). When she reached out and touched the Lord, she received the healing she so desired. Jesus recognized her faith, “Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague (Mark 5:34).” The church needs women like this dear lady. She had every reason to give up. She had been let down, but she knew Jesus could make her whole.

Second, we need women who teach their children the Scriptures like Eunice and Lois. Paul expressed what he was thinking in regards to his young protege, Timothy,  “having been reminded of the unfeigned faith that is in thee; which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and, I am persuaded, in thee also” (2 Tim 1:5). The women in the life of young Timothy laid a foundation for the faith of a man who would grow to serve the Lord. How many countless other men have been influenced and taught as young boys by faithful mothers, grandmothers, and teachers? Mother’s certainly have such an important role and unparalleled access to their young children which can build babes into great men of faith (2 Tim 3:15).

We could name many other characteristics and still leave many untouched. We need women who show hospitality to the servants of God like the Shunamite woman (2 Kings 4). We need women who know how to get along with their in-laws like Naomi and Ruth (Ruth 1:4). Modest women like Vashti (Esther 1). We need aged women who are reverent in their demeanor, women who can train our young women how to love their husbands and children. Women who can train those women to be chaste, workers at home, kind, and in subjection to their own husbands to fulfill the Word of God and not blaspheme it (Titus 2:3-5).

A wife is a blessing to her husband. She is the helper God designed for him (Gen 2:18) and all men need help. The church needs faithful, godly women that follow the examples given in the scripture. Godly women are invaluable and can be a great asset to all who know them.
