Abortion is Still Murder

On June 24,2022 the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that there is no constitutional right to abortion. Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the majority opinion wrote " (Roe v. Wade) must be overruled" because they were "egregiously wrong," the arguments "exceptionally weak" and so "damaging" that they amounted to "an abuse of judicial authority." (https://www.npr.org/2022/06/24/1102305878/supreme-court-abortion-roe-v-wade-decision-overturn). While this is true that the 1973 decision, and each affirming case before the 2022 decision was judicial abuse, there is something far more sinister at play. Abortion is and remains sinful. The reality of this sin, I hope, is unsettling.

We all are aware that just because there is no federal constitutional right to murder a child in the womb, it does not mean that this practice stopped in June 2024. As is the nature of our government, the tenth amendment states, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” So we recognize that abortion law goes back to the state.

In recent weeks, one major party has affirmed in many cases what the tenth amendment states and says it will be for the states to decide. Another party has pushed for a national law to restore Roe. What is more outrageous is while one runs from standing up against the abominable action, the other, through one of their proxies, has murdered babies and castrated men outside their convention. So what is the proper response to abortion? The proper response is to again reflect on the reality of this great national horror.

The Reality: Whole Cities Wiped Off the Map

In the year 2023 it is estimated that approximately 1,000,000 children were murdered by abortion (Guttmacher Institute). To put this into perspective, 18,874 died by gun violence (https://www.thetrace.org/2023/12/data-gun-violence-deaths-america/). I pray that this is unsettling for you because we have seen our society cry out about gun violence. Whole cities such as Jacksonville, FL or Austin, TX have populations around 1,000,000. What if an atomic warhead fell directly on those cities? What would be the response? Why are murdered babies in the womb seen as without value by a society that has selective outrage? What if we humbled ourselves before the Lord? What if we prayed to God, crying out to Him humbly for the end of this horror in all circumstances? What if we took action in the way we ought to reach those in our influence?

The Reality: The Soul is Given from God

We need not spend our efforts lobbying politicians, making posters, and protesting. We need to take more time studying and teaching others. When I look at the Word of God, I notice there is a great value attributed to human life. I see from Gen. 2:7 that as Jehovah formed the first man He breathed into him the breath of life and he became a living soul. Solomon added, in Eccl 12:7, that the origin of the soul is from God. At conception, the Lord sends your soul into your body that is formed, though dependent on your mother. However, you are distinct from your mother for you are a separate soul. David wrote, “For thou didst form my inward parts: Thou didst cover me in my mother's womb” (Psalm 139:13). From this, we learn that David's existence did not occur once he breached the birth canal, but rather from his beginning. This is because a human without the spirit is dead (cf. Jam. 2:26).

The Reality: God’s view of Life

We also can consider the fact that God views the babe in the womb as He views those outside of the womb. Brother Garland M. Robinson remarked, “The Bible speaks of the unborn child in the womb in the same words as it does the child after birth. Luke 1:41,44 uses the word "babe" to describe the unborn child in Elizabeth's womb. The word "babe" is also used to describe Jesus immediately after He was born (Luke 2:12,16). The Bible makes no distinction between the unborn (Luke 1:41,44), infants (Luke 18:15) and toddlers or young children (Acts 7:19; II Timothy 3:15)!”

The Reality: Teach What God Teaches

Abortion is always murder, and we, as God’s children, must be willing to teach such. We must teach it to our sons and daughters that abortion is not an option. We must stress abstaining from fornication. We must value the life of those inside the womb and all who are outside the womb, from 2 weeks to 90 years old. May we never do that which the Lord has said He hates; He hates hands that shed innocent blood (cf. Prov. 6:16-17). Pray brethren that this message will reach as many as we can. Abortion will not end with a ruling, it will end when godly men and women will say enough is enough. The reality is abortion starts and stops with the individual. Abortion is still murder in the Post-Roe United States.

Grace and Peace.
