Two are Better Than One
“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him that is alone when he falleth, and hath not another to lift him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one be warm alone? And if a man prevail against him that is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
Two are better than one. This is easy to understand when you are working on a job that you just cannot do on your own. We must also remember this in our marriages daily for this is the very example Paul utilizes in the Scriptures (Ephesians 5:22-33; Col. 3:18-19). We fulfill Godly marriages when husbands love their wives as Christ loved His church and when wives submit to their husbands as the church submits to Christ.
There is nothing demeaning about this. The helper that God designed for Adam was the perfect complement to him. Our Creator knew all that there was about creating the entire world and all in it. He reasoned that it was not good for man to be alone (Gen. 2:18). He also observed that there was not a suitable help meet for him (Gen 2:20). God’s plan was to create a woman for the man, and, thus, He did. It is written, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh” Gen. 2:24.
In Ecclesiastes 4, did you notice the term threefold cord? God designed marriage as a partnership between three individuals. Sounds perplexing, right? Do not worry. A Godly marriage is one man and one woman in covenant with the One God. Picture it like this: a man and a woman are holding hands and both reaching toward heaven at the same time with the other hand. Let us always seek Godly messages, walking hand and hand with our spouse and the Lord God all of our days. God is an equal part in every godly marriage. When seeking a mate, our top priority must be a mate that will help us get to heaven.
